Grosset Wines is an independently owned winery producing eight highly regarded premium wines and one spirit, each vintage. Established in 1981, the winery is situated in the historic township of Auburn at the southern tip of the Clare Valley, 100 kilometres north of Adelaide. Each of the four estate-owned vineyards is located in higher altitude country just north of the winery.
While in its fourth decade, annual production is capped at 11,000 cases (dozens), predominantly produced from twenty hectares of estate vineyards. Remaining small and focused has allowed Grosset Wines to preserve the character and individuality of the wines, developing a significant international profile by producing wines deemed consistently outstanding, benchmarks in their class.
Grosset Wines’ philosophy has remained steadfast over thirty years. The emphasis is on purity of fruit. The estate vineyards, which are ACO certified organic, are hand tended and each bunch of grapes is harvested at optimum ripeness. The winemaking process is gentle and uncomplicated. With dedication, discipline and the application of knowledge garnered through decades of experience, the result is the finest expression of variety and place.
While it’s tricky to assert that the 2014 Grosset Alea has come of age in just three short vintages, a case could be made to justify such a claim. While having the advantage of the excellent harvest, this is a very smart, balanced riesling. It shows restraint and delicacy on the nose with some lime blossom notes, has silky texture that is initially soft, yet is tight and gently grippy in the mid-palate. There are positive lemon curd and lime zest flavours, a tight structure and lively softish cleansing acidity that is dry and zingy.
