Concha Y Toro - Marques de Casa Concha, Carmenere 2015 , Rapel Valley, Chile

Concha y Toro’s Marqués de Casa Concha Carmenère is a single vineyard wine made from fruit grown in the estate’s Peumo Vineyard, which is located in the Cachapoal section of Chile’s Rapel Valley, just north of the city of Santa Cruz. Winemaker Marcelo Papa says this vineyard was specifically chosen for growing Carmenère because of its alluvial clay soil, which retains water and aids in the ripening of late-ripening varietals like Carmenère.

The grapes for this wine are hand-harvested and fermented in stainless steel. Aging takes place in new and used oak barrels for 18 months prior to release; however, Marcelo is careful to ensure that oak aging does not overpower the wine. As he explains, “Today we are a lot more comfortable with our origins, so we are trying to use less and less new oak so that we really get a sense of place and can taste terroir instead of tasting extra things in the wine.”
